Why Zones and Conduits Make Machinery More Resilient

The Machinery Reg­u­la­tion has made Indus­trial Secu­rity a pre­req­ui­site for func­tioning Safety. Stan­dards such as IEC 62443 and the forth­coming EN 50742 rec­om­mend a clear approach: seg­ment automa­tion net­works into zones, con­trol com­mu­ni­ca­tions between them and specif­i­cally pro­tect safety-related func­tions. Radar technology for automation

One focus area for Pilz is to expand con­ven­tional safety tech­nology using inno­v­a­tive sensor tech­nolo­gies, to make the safe automa­tion of the future more effi­cient. An example is radar tech­nology: radar sen­sors from Pilz can already be used to mon­itor zones safely.

Exports to India

India intro­duces new Machinery Safety reg­u­la­tions. In future, the “Machinery and Elec­trical Equip­ment Safety (Omnibus Tech­nical Reg­u­la­tion) Order, 2024” will require BIS (Bureau of Indian Stan­dards) cer­ti­fi­ca­tion and a local rep­re­sen­ta­tive. This cre­ates new market access require­ments for inter­na­tional machine man­u­fac­turers wishing to export to India.

“Safe & easy complete solution for packaging machinery”

The mod­ular sort packer from A+F Fördertechnik & Automa­tion is designed to repackage trays filled with single-variety del­i­catessen salads so that they appear in a “colourful” mix of vari­eties on the tray or on the super­market shelf. A+F dis­cov­ered that the safety solu­tion “behind” this pack­aging machine could “only be found at Pilz”.

Systematic gate guarding!

Reducing bar­riers between human and machine would be a desir­able goal. But in many appli­ca­tions, the required safety must be guar­an­teed using mov­able guards – while always focusing on pro­duc­tion effi­ciency.

The safety status of machinery must be val­i­dated at reg­ular inter­vals. On three dif­ferent, com­pre­hen­sive levels, it will soon be pos­sible for machine man­u­fac­turers or oper­a­tors to imple­ment this type of val­i­da­tion even more effi­ciently.

State-of-the-art Security

Secu­rity has become an indis­pens­able part of automa­tion, but with new require­ments and nor­ma­tive spec­i­fi­ca­tions, man­u­fac­turers, inte­gra­tors and oper­a­tors are faced with the ques­tion of how their staff can become qual­i­fied for the new chal­lenges. In response, Pilz has expanded its range of training courses for the pro­fes­sional devel­op­ment of spe­cial­ists to become Secu­rity experts.

A decade full of knowledge

With the estab­lish­ment of the qual­i­fi­ca­tion as CMSE, Cer­ti­fied Machinery Safety Expert, Pilz broke new ground ten years ago in terms of com­mu­ni­cating knowl­edge in the machinery safety sector. Today this type of inter­na­tion­ally uni­form and inde­pen­dently cer­ti­fied qual­i­fi­ca­tion is a suc­cess model.

All fired up for Safety

Let’s take a look at a cold rolling mill in which steel strip coils are processed. The pro­duc­tion process includes five steps: pick­ling, cold rolling, annealing, tem­pering and then fin­ishing. The chal­lenge? The fre­quent shut­ting down of the start-up burners, which ignite the main burners.

IO-Link Safety is ready

IO-Link is the open market stan­dard for sensor com­mu­ni­ca­tion. It should soon be pos­sible to also use the com­mu­ni­ca­tion system for data exchange in func­tional safety.

Security affects us all

Indus­trial Secu­rity not only includes the pro­tec­tion of data, but at the same time also guar­an­tees the integrity of safety func­tions and mea­sures. If a pro­duc­tion ­worker starts up a plant, for example, even though they are not autho­rised to do so, this is already con­sid­ered a secu­rity inci­dent. This manip­u­la­tion, even if ­unin­ten­tional, endan­gers the safety of other employees. This makes it even more impor­tant to con­sider safety holis­ti­cally – because it also plays a key role in ­ques­tions of lia­bility.

In step: Retrofit on the points

What can you do if the rail infra­struc­ture for regional and local trans­port is ageing, ham­pering the imple­men­ta­tion of attrac­tive clock-face sched­ules? When mod­ernising out­dated points con­trollers in Kraków and four other Polish cities, the com­pany ZUE put its trust in the automa­tion system PSS 4000. This now reli­ably and ­safely con­trols these points.

Maintenance without restart

When a machine is being main­tained, it is impor­tant that the per­sonnel can per­form the work con­sci­en­tiously and that the plant and machinery never starts up during this work. Dig­ital main­te­nance safe­guarding there­fore ensures that only autho­rised per­sons gain access.

A manager for intralogistics

In coop­er­a­tion with the start-up NAiSE GmbH, Pilz offers the world’s first traffic and order man­ager for all par­tic­i­pants in ­intral­o­gis­tics – for people as well as trans­port sys­tems. With this, Pilz is expanding its offer for safe appli­ca­tions of auto­mated guided vehicle (AGV) sys­tems.

Going with the flow

Auto­mated guided vehicle (AGV) sys­tems coast through the ware­house, inde­pen­dently pick up goods at point A and unload them again at point B. To ensure every­thing flows smoothly, safe scan­ners, safe analysis units and an indus­trial fire­wall are also on board.

A simple and quick overview of the safety and con­for­mity status of your own machines is often worth its weight in gold. Do I still have full lia­bility pro­tec­tion? Are upgrades nec­es­sary? This is pre­cisely where the new ser­vice Machinery Safety Eval­u­a­tion – or MSE for short – from Pilz comes in.

Managing access

A mod­ular system offering that pre­vents unau­tho­rised access and can be ­adapted to the respec­tive appli­ca­tion is impor­tant because of how indi­vidual ­access to plant and machinery is. The most effort is in the main­te­nance of ­per­mis­sions and this can be sup­ported by the appro­priate soft­ware tools.

Packaging – I trust you!

Pack­aging offers prod­ucts pro­tec­tion and gives con­sumers the feeling: “My product is safe.” But to be able to ensure that they can fully trust in the quality of the ­pack­aging, it is nec­es­sary to con­sider safety and secu­rity as early as the man­u­fac­turing process of pack­aging machinery and plants.

Open for efficiency

In one-second inter­vals, the puller pulls in the pre­punched card­board blanks and the tray former from Sema Sys­temtechnik GmbH folds, glues and seals these to form fin­ished outer pack­aging. The inter­esting part: the card­board blanks func­tion as a mov­able guard. If the mate­rial feed runs empty, how­ever, the oper­ating per­sonnel can reach right inside. For this reason, a TÜV Süd cer­ti­fied safety solu­tion guar­an­tees safety in every work step.
