Jan Falb works in the Quality Management department at Pilz, where he is primarily responsible for sustainability management. In our “3 minutes with …” column, he answers the most important current questions about his area of work.
Everyone is talking about sustainability: which questions are you dealing with currently at Pilz?
I receive enquiries relating to our products, our business strategy and also our suppliers. Customers are increasingly setting their own sustainability targets, which they can only achieve if we, as their partner, pull in the same direction – which we do of course.
What contribution is Pilz already making towards sustainability?
With our comprehensive range of services in the retrofit area, for example, we support our customers as they work towards greater resource conservation and efficiency. The high quality standard of our products also means fewer returns and less scrappage. However, should a device be defective, we invite customers to return it to us. Our Repair Centre staff check the extent to which the defective device can be re-used, either by repair or by exchanging individual components.
And which projects will you be pursuing in future?
Following the publication of our first sustainability report in accordance with the German Sustainability Code, we are currently working on our second, international report. Based on our international climate accounting, we are defining appropriate measures for reducing our greenhouse gas emissions to an absolute minimum. As part of this, our development department is also working hard to switch to “greener” plastics. Because our polycarbonate housing accounts for the largest share of our products’ CO2 emissions. The challenge: our devices that are used for machinery safety must meet the requirements of the various international inspection authorities.
Sustainability and Pilz
Based on our fundamental principles, with our products and services we contribute towards the protection of human, machine and the environment. That’s true for our own employees, but also for our customers worldwide. It is our duty to ensure that subsequent generations live in a world in which they can enjoy safety, health and well-being. As a third generation family business, that is what we have stood for since our company was founded 75 years ago.
