An all-rounder for Indian signalling technology

Globally, India is the fastest growing economy. The railway infrastructure is also expected to keep pace: investments are being made into its expansion and modernisation. The safe, modular railway controller PSSrail from Pilz is also used as part of a cooperation initiative.

How has an automation company from southern Germany managed to help shape Indian signalling technology? Pilz and the signalling technology company Deltron have been working together for several years on solutions for applications in railway signalling technology. These are used in practice at numerous railway stations in various parts of India. The two companies are now widening their cooperation.

PSSrail is adaptable

In addition to the high quality seal “Made in Germany”, it is the flexibility of the safe, modular railway controller PSSrail that is particularly important to Deltron. The modular platform enables system suppliers to adapt the controller’s inputs and outputs to a wide range of applications – interlockings, level crossings or signals. It also offers safety in accordance with SIL‑4. Another advantage for use in India is EULYNX compatibility. Even though it is a European standard protocol, it facilitates manufacturer-independent communication worldwide, between the interlocking and the track, for example. This will guarantee efficient processes in India too.

PSSrail accelerates digitisation

With PSSrail, Pilz offers a control solution that enables an upgrade to the transnational, manufacturer-independent EULYNX standard, in the course of digitisation. That’s because, due to its compatibility, the safe, modular railway control system can be used as an Object Controller. Object Controllers translate digital control commands from the interlockings into analogue signals for the trackside components, such as points or light signals. As such the railway control system PSSrail accelerates the implementation of transnational, manufacturer-independent digitisation in control and safety technology.

Two experts for innovative signalling technology solutions

“Our experience from numerous international railway infrastructure projects and Deltron’s understanding of the individual requirements of the Indian railway market are the basis for successful cooperation,” says Sebastian Lüke, Head of Business Unit Rail at Pilz, describing the collaboration. “We offer tailor-made, innovative solutions for a modern Indian railway infrastructure, based on our safe, modular railway controller PSSrail.”

“What we value about Pilz solutions is their reliability. Thanks to their modular design, they satisfy all our signalling technology requirements.”

Indranil Mukherjee, Director of Deltron Equipment & Systems

Pilz’s presence in India is also crucial for the trusting cooperation between the two family businesses. It means that technical questions can be clarified quickly. Pilz’s Business Unit Rail supported the approval process with the Indian Federal Railway Authority, the Research Design and Standards Organisation (RDSO). These are all crucial factors in shaping the future of the railway in India, together with Deltron.

About Deltron

Deltron is an ISO 9001:2015 certified and RDSO approved railway signalling company based in Calcutta, Eastern India. Since 1986, the family-run company has been offering RDSO-approved failsafe railway signalling elements – from development and manufacture to installation and commissioning. Deltron solutions are used in more than 4,000 stations run by Indian Railways. The company has sales and support teams in all of the country’s 17 railway zones.
