David Machanek: There is still a lot of uncer\u00adtainty. At the same time, we are noting that our cus\u00adtomers have a great hunger for knowl\u00adedge because their fears of cyber attacks are growing \u2013 par\u00adtic\u00adu\u00adlarly in small and medium-sized com\u00adpa\u00adnies. There are many com\u00adpa\u00adnies in this area of con\u00adflict and the uncer\u00adtainty is ampli\u00adfied by the pending legal and nor\u00adma\u00adtive changes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
We asked around 150 man\u00adu\u00adfac\u00adturers and oper\u00ada\u00adtors what their level of knowl\u00adedge is con\u00adcerning Secu\u00adrity. We wanted to know how well pre\u00adpared the Aus\u00adtrian market is for this topic and who is respon\u00adsible for this in the com\u00adpa\u00adnies. An impor\u00adtant finding is that many cus\u00adtomers have not yet taken any steps on the sub\u00adject of Indus\u00adtrial Secu\u00adrity even though they are well aware of its rel\u00ade\u00advance.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The most impor\u00adtant con\u00adclu\u00adsion for me was that the respon\u00adsi\u00adbil\u00adi\u00adties for Secu\u00adrity on plant and machinery have still not been clar\u00adi\u00adfied at all in these com\u00adpa\u00adnies. This has also not been clar\u00adi\u00adfied among the man\u00adu\u00adfac\u00adturers. It is clear that IT per\u00adforms IT secu\u00adrity, but who is there for the secu\u00adrity at the machine? The oper\u00ada\u00adtors we asked tended to see this as maintenance\u2019s respon\u00adsi\u00adbility. But com\u00adpa\u00adnies are fre\u00adquently unaware of the fact that Indus\u00adtrial Secu\u00adrity requires spe\u00adcialist knowl\u00adedge and that a lack of respon\u00adsi\u00adbil\u00adi\u00adties and mea\u00adsures opens the door to attackers. This just makes it that much more impor\u00adtant that we do the edu\u00adca\u00adtional work \u2013 just the same as for machinery safety. After all Pilz is not just an ambas\u00adsador for Safety, but also for Secu\u00adrity. Safety for me also encom\u00adpasses Secu\u00adrity.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The main focus here is on the ques\u00adtion of what effects a cyber attack would have on the com\u00adpany. My tip: every com\u00adpany should brain\u00adstorm and run through how day-to-day work would be changed by this type of attack. From our own expe\u00adri\u00adence fol\u00adlowing the cyber attack on Pilz in 2019, I now advise making sure to keep a paper copy of the con\u00adtact data of your most impor\u00adtant con\u00adtacts, for example. Many people are ini\u00adtially sur\u00adprised by this. Beyond the threat sit\u00adu\u00ada\u00adtion, many machine builders and oper\u00ada\u00adtors are also dealing with the new Machinery Reg\u00adu\u00adla\u00adtion and NIS 2 is also of great sig\u00adnif\u00adi\u00adcance (see box at bottom left).<\/p>\n\n\n\n
In dis\u00adcus\u00adsion I fre\u00adquently hear that the company\u2019s machines are not even attached to an ERP system or a cloud, so there is no need for any secu\u00adrity mea\u00adsures. If I then ask if there is a USB port and whether this could be used by an oper\u00adator to charge a mobile device, meaning that gateway would sud\u00addenly be opened, this imme\u00addi\u00adately gets their atten\u00adtion. Our job is to ask ques\u00adtions and pro\u00advide our cus\u00adtomers with the best pos\u00adsible advice.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
It doesn\u2019t make a big dif\u00adfer\u00adence whether a machine is new or old; secu\u00adrity solu\u00adtions can often be inte\u00adgrated through \u201cplug and play\u201d. Our access per\u00admis\u00adsion system PITreader is an \u00adexample of this. Secu\u00adrity retro\u00adfits are def\u00adi\u00adnitely an impor\u00adtant topic!
