After the cyber attack on Pilz in 2019, nothing was as it was before: com\u00admu\u00adni\u00adca\u00adtion both inter\u00adnally and with our cus\u00adtomers broke down, valu\u00adable data was encrypted and unus\u00adable. Access to com\u00adpany com\u00adputers, including those of inter\u00adna\u00adtional sub\u00adsidiaries, was also restricted. Pro\u00adduc\u00adtion at the Ost\u00adfildern site was ini\u00adtially halted.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Safety & Secu\u00adrity on Tour<\/a><\/p>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n

Cyber threats have increased sig\u00adnif\u00adi\u00adcantly in recent years. Leg\u00adis\u00adla\u00adtors have also reacted, recog\u00adnising that a secu\u00adrity inci\u00addent can have serious con\u00adse\u00adquences for human, machine and com\u00adpany: from pro\u00adduc\u00adtion down\u00adtimes and data loss through to haz\u00adards to employees who operate the machine. Indus\u00adtrial Secu\u00adrity will become manda\u00adtory.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cMany medium-sized com\u00adpa\u00adnies were in the same sit\u00adu\u00ada\u00adtion as Pilz at the time. We have learned from this, and are passing on the knowl\u00adedge we gained to our cus\u00adtomers,\u201d says Mar\u00adi\u00adanne Ecker, Mar\u00adketing Man\u00adager at the Pilz sub\u00adsidiary in Aus\u00adtria.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

First-hand Security<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

The Pilz sub\u00adsidiary, with branches in Vienna, Graz and Linz, pro\u00advides its cus\u00adtomers with com\u00adpre\u00adhen\u00adsive training courses on Secu\u00adrity and also helps them imple\u00adment and improve risk assess\u00adments on plant and machinery. With around 40 employees, they have their own Indus\u00adtrial Secu\u00adrity depart\u00adment, which now runs the \u201cSafety & Secu\u00adrity on Tour\u201d pro\u00adgramme, for example. This is a free event that runs annu\u00adally throughout the region, where experts from Pilz Aus\u00adtria pro\u00advide infor\u00adma\u00adtion about the latest devel\u00adop\u00adments in Machinery Safety and Indus\u00adtrial Secu\u00adrity. This year\u2019s topics include inno\u00adva\u00adtions in Safety and Secu\u00adrity (EN ISO 13849 and prEN 50742), a demo of IO-Link tech, details of how to carry out a gap analysis, through to CE marking in accor\u00addance with the Machinery Reg\u00adu\u00adla\u00adtion and Cyber Resilience Act.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Security requirements overwhelm machine operators<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

The main problem with com\u00adpa\u00adnies is often that they don\u2019t view Secu\u00adrity holis\u00adti\u00adcally, encom\u00adpassing both tech\u00adnology and organ\u00adi\u00adsa\u00adtion. Small busi\u00adnesses often employ an external ser\u00advice provider for IT Secu\u00adrity, but often they only take care of the com\u00adpa\u00adny\u2019s net\u00adworks and devices. Machines are also con\u00adtrolled by com\u00adputers, so there are risks to the cyber\u00adse\u00adcu\u00adrity of machines and their indi\u00advidual com\u00adpo\u00adnents, but often this is not on the plant oper\u00ada\u00adtors\u2019 radar. Also, higher-level busi\u00adness processes are often not taken into account.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Pilz Aus\u00adtria is making Secu\u00adrity tan\u00adgible<\/a><\/p>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n

\u201cIt\u2019s impor\u00adtant not to over\u00adload the com\u00adpa\u00adnies affected, as there are many require\u00adments that will come into effect from 2027. This can be over\u00adwhelming, par\u00adtic\u00adu\u00adlarly for a com\u00adpany with around 50 or more employees. A com\u00adpany that man\u00adu\u00adfac\u00adtures machinery, employs at least 50 people or achieves a cer\u00adtain turnover or bal\u00adance sheet total must comply with the Machinery Reg\u00adu\u00adla\u00adtion, the Cyber Resilience Act and the second EU direc\u00adtive on net\u00adwork and infor\u00adma\u00adtion secu\u00adrity, known as \u2018Net\u00adwork and Infor\u00adma\u00adtion Secu\u00adrity Direc\u00adtive 2\u2019, or NIS 2 for short,\u201d explains Andreas Willert, Head of Indus\u00adtrial Secu\u00adrity at Pilz Aus\u00adtria.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

At Pilz Aus\u00adtria, the first step is to work with the cus\u00adtomer to analyse the indi\u00advidual busi\u00adness processes. \u201cOur top pri\u00adority is always what\u2019s most impor\u00adtant to our cus\u00adtomers,\u201d Andreas Willert is keen to stress. The second step is then to develop an indi\u00advidual Secu\u00adrity con\u00adcept by analysing the net\u00adwork infra\u00adstruc\u00adture and poten\u00adtial risks.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Pilz is getting fit for the Cyber Resilience Act<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Com\u00adpa\u00adnies in the mechan\u00adical engi\u00adneering sector cur\u00adrently face the chal\u00adlenge of imple\u00admenting the require\u00adments of the Cyber Resilience Act. With this in mind, the sub\u00adsidiary is devel\u00adoping inter\u00adnally through appro\u00adpriate training. Col\u00adleagues from sales and tech\u00adnology, for example, are qual\u00adi\u00adfying as Cer\u00adti\u00adfied Experts for Secu\u00adrity in Automa\u00adtion (CESA). This ben\u00ade\u00adfits our cus\u00adtomers, as we can always keep them up to date with the latest stan\u00addards and direc\u00adtives.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
