\u201cFunc\u00adtional move\u00adment\u201d for fur\u00adni\u00adture means more at the Grass Group than just \u201copen and close\u201d. Every appli\u00adca\u00adtion requires the per\u00adfect move\u00adment solu\u00adtion. Fol\u00adlowing this approach, the Aus\u00adtrian global player has proven its inno\u00adv\u00ada\u00adtive strength over the last 75 years, including with the first trolley guide or the world\u2019s first double-walled drawer system. \u201cWith around 1 900 employees at 21 loca\u00adtions and more than 200 dis\u00adtri\u00adb\u00adu\u00adtion part\u00adners in 60 coun\u00adtries, we are the largest provider for move\u00adment sys\u00adtems,\u201d states Andreas Huber.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

He is the Main\u00adte\u00adnance Man\u00adager in Grass\u2019s Salzburg fac\u00adtory. \u201cWith our machinery, we mainly bring plas\u00adtics into the desired form, but thanks to two press lines we also do the same with stain\u00adless steel prod\u00aducts for house\u00adhold appli\u00adances,\u201d he explains. The latter is per\u00adformed at \u201csea\u00adsoned\u201d older-model plants that were com\u00adpletely mod\u00adernised and brought to the state of the art with regard to safety and con\u00adtrol under the lead of Pilz Aus\u00adtria.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Partner for standard-compliant solutions<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

The first round of retro\u00adfits with Pilz took place back in 2017. The reason was the relo\u00adca\u00adtion of an eccen\u00adtric press from H\u00f6chst, the head office in the Vorarl\u00adberg state, to Salzburg. \u201cIt had to be linked to an existing pro\u00adfiling plant and an upstream reel. This inspired us to look for a provider to not only replace the con\u00adtrol tech\u00adnology of the auto\u00admatic punching press, but to also per\u00adform a close inspec\u00adtion of the entire pro\u00adduc\u00adtion line, assess this with regard to com\u00adpli\u00adance with stan\u00addards, per\u00adform the nec\u00ades\u00adsary adap\u00adta\u00adtions and last but not least check the func\u00adtion of the higher-level safety con\u00adcept,\u201d clar\u00adi\u00adfies the Main\u00adte\u00adnance Man\u00adager, regarding a task that other automa\u00adtion providers with whom he placed inquiries would not even con\u00adsider.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cThrough these two press projects our col\u00adlab\u00ado\u00adra\u00adtion inten\u00adsi\u00adfied immensely. We now com\u00admu\u00adni\u00adcate with each other reg\u00adu\u00adlarly. One reason for this is the fact that presses are listed in Annex IV of the Machinery Direc\u00adtive in the cat\u00ade\u00adgory of machines that require a sep\u00ada\u00adrate con\u00adfor\u00admity assess\u00adment pro\u00adce\u00addure due to their dan\u00adgerous char\u00adac\u00adter\u00adis\u00adtics. \u201cAs we brought our first press safety con\u00adtroller onto the market in 1995, Pilz is able to rely on more than 25 years of expe\u00adri\u00adence in this sector. We are in close con\u00adtact with our col\u00adleagues from the expert team at the head\u00adquar\u00adters in Ost\u00adfildern com\u00admitted solely to con\u00adver\u00adsions and new instal\u00adla\u00adtions of press con\u00adtrollers, par\u00adtic\u00adu\u00adlarly for projects such as at Grass,\u201d explains Ronald Kahr, Sales Engi\u00adneer at Pilz Aus\u00adtria. During a second retrofit in 2021, there was no ques\u00adtion that the gen\u00aderal over\u00adhaul of a press for the Salzburg plant should once again be car\u00adried out with Pilz experts.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Safety-related complete solution for high-end production<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

\u201cThe task con\u00adsisted of exchanging the old con\u00adtroller in order to increase the process sta\u00adbility during forming of low to high-alloy steels,\u201d sum\u00admarises Thomas Stell\u00adberger, Man\u00adager of the Grass fac\u00adtory in Salzburg. As part of this, the existing con\u00adtactor con\u00adtrol as well as the safety cir\u00adcuit of the entire press line were updated. They were replaced by the con\u00adfig\u00adurable Pilz small con\u00adtroller PNOZ\u00admulti 2 with spe\u00adcial mod\u00adules and cer\u00adti\u00adfied soft\u00adware blocks for a safe acti\u00adva\u00adtion of presses. For the stan\u00addard automa\u00adtion, the higher-level automa\u00adtion system PSS 4000 from Pilz was inte\u00adgrated.<\/p>\n\n\n

When it comes to the pro\u00adtec\u00adtive fences, there is a mix of old and new after the retrofit. Wher\u00adever safety retro\u00adfits had to be made, PSENopt II safety light cur\u00adtains from Pilz now pro\u00advide stan\u00addard-com\u00adpliant finger, hand and body pro\u00adtec\u00adtion.<\/p><\/div>\n<\/div>\n\n\n

Main\u00adte\u00adnance Man\u00adager Andreas Huber goes into detail: \u201cThis upgrade project involves a double-sided eccen\u00adtric press for pro\u00adgres\u00adsive dies, year of con\u00adstruc\u00adtion 1987, in which tele\u00adscopic slides for ovens receive the cor\u00adre\u00adsponding punch-outs, imprints and inscrip\u00adtions. Aspects to be con\u00adsid\u00adered with regard to safety and con\u00adtrol included the upstream feed of the end\u00adless belt via a reel as well as the con\u00adnected pro\u00adfiling machine.\u201d Addi\u00adtion\u00adally, the problem of a feed that was already defec\u00adtive was also to be solved with the retrofit.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Upgrade to and around the press<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Pilz took over all the tasks as part of the safety ser\u00advice, from the risk assess\u00adment to the cre\u00adation of the safety con\u00adcept and on to the val\u00adi\u00adda\u00adtion and CE marking. The retrofit of the entire press line \u2013 com\u00adprising the three machine parts reel with straight\u00adener, pro\u00adfiling machine and auto\u00admatic punching press \u2013 included instal\u00adla\u00adtion of a com\u00adpletely new switch cab\u00adinet and con\u00adtrol con\u00adsole as well as the wiring of all new safety-related com\u00adpo\u00adnents. The safety tech\u00adnology upgrade of the pro\u00adfiling machine addi\u00adtion\u00adally included the inte\u00adgra\u00adtion of the safe small con\u00adtroller PNOZ\u00admulti 2, together with new rope pull switches and the coded safety switch PSEN\u00adcode for posi\u00adtion mon\u00adi\u00adtoring.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Pilz also kept an eye on the plant sec\u00adtion reel with straight\u00adener: Today this is pro\u00adtected by the safety locking device PSEN\u00adm\u00adlock for safe inter\u00adlocking and guard locking, which can be easily man\u00adaged via the con\u00adtrol unit PIT\u00adgatebox. And wher\u00adever bar\u00adrier-free safety had to be retro\u00adfitted via light cur\u00adtains, the safety light cur\u00adtains PSENopt II for finger, hand and body pro\u00adtec\u00adtion from Pilz sup\u00adple\u00adment the light cur\u00adtains already installed. Fol\u00adlowing the con\u00adver\u00adsion, Grass received a press line that was ready for pro\u00adduc\u00adtion.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Main\u00adte\u00adnance Man\u00adager at the Salzburg Grass fac\u00adtory sums it up with high praise: \u201cPilz prod\u00aducts were already in use before, but through these two press projects our col\u00adlab\u00ado\u00adra\u00adtion inten\u00adsi\u00adfied immensely. Keeping to the dead\u00adline, man\u00adu\u00adfac\u00adturer-neu\u00adtral advice, the actual imple\u00admen\u00adta\u00adtion and the final con\u00adfor\u00admity assess\u00adment pro\u00adce\u00addure \u2013 every\u00adthing really worked per\u00adfectly.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n
