That\u2019s when he moves from his actual work\u00adplace in the \u201cAdvanced Devel\u00adop\u00adment\u201d depart\u00adment at Pilz, to the \u201cARENA2036\u201d at Stuttgart Uni\u00adver\u00adsity. On site, in the large hall at the research campus, between robot cells and vir\u00adtual reality work\u00adsta\u00adtions, an engi\u00adneer from the pro\u00adduc\u00adtion tech\u00adnology depart\u00adment of a large auto\u00admo\u00adtive sup\u00adplier comes up to Bernd Neuschwander: \u201cYou make safe automa\u00adtion! We have an idea for an auto\u00admated guided vehicle system in our pro\u00adduc\u00adtion. Will you give us your opinion on it?\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Pilz conducts research in ARENA2036<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n

ARENAARENA stands for Active Research Envi\u00adron\u00adment for the Next Gen\u00ader\u00ada\u00adtion of Auto\u00admo\u00adbiles. Resource-effi\u00adcient, com\u00adpet\u00adi\u00adtive pro\u00adduc\u00adtion models are intended to emerge by the year 2036, the 150th anniver\u00adsary of the car. Pilz has been a member of ARENA2036<\/a> for nine years, actively working on a variety of projects. \u201cIn ARENA2036 we dis\u00adcuss future trends and new pro\u00adduc\u00adtion methods, and then imme\u00addi\u00adately test them for prac\u00adti\u00adcality within projects\u201d, Neuschwander explains. \u201cDirect exchange between tech\u00adni\u00adcians, engi\u00adneers and devel\u00adopers is the key ben\u00adefit \u2013 no hier\u00adarchy, just deal directly.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

IIn the fluid pro\u00adduc\u00adtion project at ARENA2036, pro\u00adduc\u00adtion resources are divided into loca\u00adtion-flex\u00adible mod\u00adules. That way, dynamic machine sys\u00adtems such as shelf access units can be cre\u00adated for the pro\u00adduc\u00adtion of the future. \u00a9 ARENA2036<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n

For example, Bernd Neuschwander col\u00adlab\u00ado\u00adrates in the fluid pro\u00adduc\u00adtion project, which is con\u00adcerned with the devel\u00adop\u00adment and imple\u00admen\u00adta\u00adtion of a human-cen\u00adtred, cyber-phys\u00adical pro\u00adduc\u00adtion con\u00adcept. \u201cIt sounds abstract, but in prac\u00adtice it means that all pro\u00adduc\u00adtion plants are ini\u00adtially broken down into flex\u00adible mod\u00adules. These can then be com\u00adbined to form dynamic units, entirely according to need.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The human plays a key role, as an active shaper of their pro\u00adduc\u00adtion envi\u00adron\u00adment\u201d, Neuschwander explains. The vision: plat\u00adforms on which cars are assem\u00adbled and con\u00adfig\u00adured. These plat\u00adforms move freely within the hall. Other plat\u00adforms con\u00adtaining sup\u00adplier parts or nec\u00ades\u00adsary assem\u00adblies are docked and undocked as part of the pro\u00adduc\u00adtion process. Human and robot work together, without a safety fence.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Can machinery safety be digitised?<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Adapt\u00adability also plays a major role in the project SDM4FZI. The solu\u00adtion approach: to define pro\u00adduc\u00adtion exclu\u00adsively via soft\u00adware and there\u00adfore make it dynam\u00adi\u00adcally adjustable. In this way, the project part\u00adners wish to create a purely dig\u00adital pro\u00adduc\u00adtion fac\u00adtory, in order to achieve max\u00adimum adapt\u00adability. \u201cThe safety of the machinery must also be part of this com\u00adpre\u00adhen\u00adsive soft\u00adware\u201d, says Matthias Schweiker, a col\u00adleague of Bernd Neuschwander, who is researching the future of machinery safety in this project, for Pilz.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cWe are working on tool-sup\u00adported CE con\u00adfor\u00admity, in other words the digi\u00adti\u00adsa\u00adtion of machinery safety, net\u00adworking and secu\u00adrity, and on devel\u00adoping the dig\u00adital admin\u00adis\u00adtra\u00adtion shell for safety para\u00adme\u00adters.\u201d The team has been working in defined work pack\u00adages since October 2021. The main focus at the moment is in cre\u00adating stan\u00addards. The project will be com\u00adpleted at the end of March 2024.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Machinery safety in real-time<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n

The Smart Fac\u00adtory KL<\/a> in Kaiser\u00adslautern is the other key research partner for Pilz. Here too, Pilz is col\u00adlab\u00ado\u00adrating on the automa\u00adtion solu\u00adtions of the future \u2013 including safety. To ensure that the pro\u00adtec\u00adtion of human and machine remains guar\u00adan\u00adteed at all times.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

With regard to safety, dynamic sit\u00adu\u00ada\u00adtions in future pro\u00adduc\u00adtion envi\u00adron\u00adments must be checked and enabled in real-time. The key\u00adword here is \u201cReal-time safety\u201d. In the future it\u2019s con\u00adceiv\u00adable that var\u00adious machines \u2013 or gen\u00aderal assets \u2013 will share safety devices. The term here is \u201cShared safety\u201d, a con\u00adcept that Pilz is testing along with its part\u00adners in the Smart Fac\u00adtory KL.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

ARENA2036 and Smart Factory KL strengthen their cooperation<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n

ARENA2036 and Smart Fac\u00adtory KL wish to work together closely in future: The first joint project, Project ARENA\u2011X<\/a>, is devel\u00adoping a demon\u00adstra\u00adtion and test envi\u00adron\u00adment for the use of data spaces. In these data spaces, all com\u00adpa\u00adnies par\u00adtic\u00adi\u00adpating in the value-added process are to be able to exchange data safely.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cThe data-space-based envi\u00adron\u00adment serves humans: it cre\u00adates the oppor\u00adtu\u00adnity to demon\u00adstrate, try out and test. New knowl\u00adedge for safe automa\u00adtion can emerge as a result, com\u00adpletely in the spirit of Manufacturing\u2011X\u201d, says Susanne Kun\u00adschert, Man\u00adaging Partner of Pilz. Kun\u00adschert is also a member of the board of ARENA2036. \u201cData spaces are the solid foun\u00adda\u00adtion for dig\u00adital col\u00adlab\u00ado\u00adra\u00adtion. They can be con\u00adnected, and com\u00adbine the knowl\u00adedge of avail\u00adable ser\u00advices from a mul\u00adti\u00adtude of pro\u00adduc\u00adtion envi\u00adron\u00adments.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Data space creates degrees of freedom<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n

In Kaiser\u00adslautern, where Smart Fac\u00adtory KL is based, a model truck is being man\u00adu\u00adfac\u00adtured in a shared pro\u00adduc\u00adtion, so far at three loca\u00adtions. In the research sce\u00adnario, cus\u00adtomers can assemble a lorry via a product con\u00adfig\u00adu\u00adrator. In future, a pro\u00adduc\u00adtion model from Pilz, which is located in ARENA2036 in Stuttgart, will be part of the pro\u00adduc\u00adtion archi\u00adtec\u00adture, as it is incor\u00adpo\u00adrated into the Gaia\u2011X data space at the Smart Fac\u00adtory KL in Kaiser\u00adslautern.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

For example, the con\u00adfig\u00adu\u00adrator offers the option of \u201cYellow driver\u2019s cab\u201d. Once clicked, pro\u00adduc\u00adtion in ARENA2036 should start. The first step is to \u201cpro\u00adduce\u201d the driver\u2019s cab in Pilz yellow in the 3D printer; it then under\u00adgoes quality con\u00adtrol using an AI algo\u00adrithm. It is then ready to trans\u00adport to Kaiser\u00adslautern, where it can be installed in the model lorry.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cThe poten\u00adtial relo\u00adca\u00adtion of man\u00adu\u00adfac\u00adturing processes and adjust\u00adments, as well as safe data exchange in data spaces, create new degrees of freedom for pro\u00adduc\u00adtion\u201d, Bernd Neuschwander explains.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

DBut why do Bernd Neuschwander, Matthias Schweiker and other col\u00adleagues reg\u00adu\u00adlarly head to ARENA2036, when there are dig\u00adital data spaces for exchange? Neuschwander does not have to think for long: \u201cThe defining moment in joint research and devel\u00adop\u00adment activ\u00adi\u00adties is, and always will be, the face-to-face meeting. That\u2019s where cre\u00adativity is devel\u00adoped, which is very valu\u00adable. The future is formed through coop\u00ader\u00ada\u00adtion.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n
